Indian benchmark indices Nifty 50 and Sensex posted their strongest weekly gains since April last week, rising by more than 2.4 percent. Market sentiment this week will be driven by corporate earnings, crude oil price shifts, and the launch of the Jio Platforms IPO.

Key Market Events

The second quarter earnings season is gaining speed with IT results matching estimates. Infosys, Eternal, Swiggy, Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement, Adani Energy, Adani Green Energy, Adani Total Gas, Adani Power, Tata Motors, and HPCL are scheduled to report their earnings for the quarter ended September 2026. Meanwhile, the Jio Platforms IPO opens for subscription on Wednesday, October 21, and closes on Friday, October 23, with anchor bidding on Monday, October 19. Backed by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Limited, this fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares with a face value of 10 rupees each features a price band of 1,065 to 1,119 rupees per share.

Institutional Flows and Currency

Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers for the ninth straight week, though selling eased compared to previous periods. Domestic institutional investors stayed net buyers for a ninth consecutive week, helping balance out foreign outflows. Month-to-date domestic buying has largely absorbed foreign selling, while the Indian rupee surged nearly two percent in its biggest weekly gain in seven months, closing at 94.96 rupees per dollar.

Global Factors and Outlook

Cooling US 10-year Treasury yields eased pressure on emerging market valuations, while Brent crude prices surged past 110 dollars a barrel on Friday amid tightening supply and strong fuel demand from the shipping industry. Trading across capital, derivatives, electronic gold, and debt markets will stay closed on Tuesday, October 20, for the Dussehra celebration. Analyst Pabitro Mukherjee notes that sustained buying could push the Nifty toward 23,500, while failure to hold momentum might lead to consolidation in the 22,500 to 23,150 range.

Context

Stock markets naturally respond to a mix of corporate earnings, large public offerings, and macro factors like currency strength and global commodity prices. Institutional buying patterns and festive holidays also shape weekly trading volumes and investor participation in India.
