Match Preview

India and Zimbabwe meet in the second women's T20 match in Raipur on Sunday, with the Indian top-order looking to put up a much stronger batting performance. The visiting Zimbabwe women's team is on its first-ever tour of India for this three-match series.

First Match Struggles

In the series opener, India slipped to a dismal four wickets down for just nineteen runs. Off-spinner Nyasha Gwanzura struck three early blows in the powerplay to break the back of the Indian batting. Shafali Verma, Anushka Sharma, captain Smriti Mandhana, and former captain Harmanpreet Kaur all fell for single-digit scores. However, debutant Niki Prasad and experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma rescued the side with an unbeaten eighty-two-run partnership to secure a four-wicket win.

Historic Bowling Feat

Niki Prasad followed up her thirty-nine-run knock from the first match with a historic bowling spell in the second game. Brought on to bowl her very first over in international cricket by captain Smriti Mandhana, she took two wickets on her first two deliveries. She removed Mugeri caught behind by Richa Ghosh with her very first ball, becoming the first Indian woman to take a wicket on her first-ever T20 international delivery. She then trapped Nyasha Gwanzura leg-before on the very next ball, making her the first bowler in the world to take two wickets on her first two T20 international career balls. She narrowly missed a hat-trick when a subsequent appeal for lbw was turned down because the ball was missing leg stump.

Team Standings And Tactics

Despite the early batting collapse in the first game, Deepti Sharma strongly defended the team management's aggressive approach, noting that luck sometimes favors the opponent but the team keeps learning from such matches. In the second match, Zimbabwe struggled in the powerplay, hitting only a single boundary on the final ball of that phase. Kelis Ndhlovu fell for a duck, Biza scored seven runs, Chipoti Tiripano made thirty-four runs, Myers added nine runs, and captain Nkomo contributed twenty-two runs, while Zimbabwe was restricted to one hundred fourteen runs for five wickets in the previous encounter.

Squads

India's squad features Smriti Mandhana as captain, alongside Shafali Verma, Niki Prasad, Harmanpreet Kaur, Anushka Sharma, Richa Ghosh, G. Kamalini, Deepti Sharma, Prema Rawat, Shri Charani, Nandini Sharma, Kranti Gaud, Arundhati Reddy, Jintimani Kalita, and Minnu Mani. Zimbabwe's squad is led by captain Josephine Nkomo, with Beloved Biza, Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, Kelis Ndhlovu, Michelle Mavunga, Francisca Chipare, Olinder Chare, Kudzai Chigora, Nyasha Gwanzura, Nomvelo Sibanda, Loreen Phiri, Chiedza Dhururu, Modester Mupachikwa, Tendai Makusha, and Sharne Mayers.

Context

Bilateral cricket series are common fixtures in the international women's calendar, offering touring teams valuable exposure in different conditions. Powerplay overs in Twenty20 cricket impose fielding restrictions that often lead to aggressive stroke-play or crucial early breakthroughs by spin and pace bowlers alike.
