NASA has successfully activated the primary instrument on its new four billion dollar space telescope and captured starlight for the first time. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which carries a 300 megapixel camera, is currently traveling one million miles away from Earth. Even though the telescope has not reached its final destination yet, it has already doubled its expected lifespan. The mission team also checked out the coronagraph instrument during these initial tests to ensure everything is working as planned.
