UPDATE - follow-up to Ahead of Tarique Rahman's Japan visit, Tokyo envisions connectivity for India's northeast, Bay of Bengal region: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is preparing for a four-day official trip to Japan following an invitation from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Project Plans
Japanese foreign ministry officials revealed plans to build a trade corridor linking the Bay of Bengal through the Matarbari deep-sea port to the seven Indian states in the east. Tokyo is funding this port via the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Officials hope to copy the success of a similar trade path linking Bangkok with Cambodia and Vietnam.
Current Challenges
While the Maitri Bridge over the Feni river was built previously to link Tripura to local ports, it is still shut due to current political troubles between New Delhi and Dhaka. Even so, Tokyo officials remain hopeful about long-term cooperation between the two neighbours.
Context
Deep-sea ports allow massive cargo vessels to dock directly without needing smaller ships to transfer goods from regional hubs like Singapore or Colombo. Such infrastructure projects often take many years of diplomatic planning and cross-border financial backing to fully complete.
