Actor Dia Mirza recently marked twenty five years since her debut film Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein released on the big screen. Speaking on Screen Spotlight, she revealed that the 2001 romantic film was actually the third movie she signed, following her win in the Miss India Asia Pacific pageant.
Early Career and First Films
Director Anupam Kher and actor Anil Kapoor spotted Dia in a hotel lobby in Hyderabad while there for a shoot. They offered her a role in Om Jai Jagdish, which became the first film she signed after Mr Kher visited her parents to convince them. When she moved to Mumbai, Mr Kher gave her a token amount of eleven thousand rupees, which she used to buy furniture for her new home. While doing workshops with theatre director Feroz Abbas Khan, producer Vashu Bhagnani offered her a role in Deewaanapan after a situation with another actor. This action romance directed by Ashu Trikha became the first film she started shooting for, sharing her first day on set with Arjun Rampal. Director Ashu Trikha also had Kabir Sadanand shadow Dia to help her get used to a film set.
Making of RHTDM
After finishing Deewaanapan, Vashu Bhagnani offered her Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein while she prepared for Om Jai Jagdish. The Gautham Vasudev Menon film was a Hindi remake of his Tamil hit Minnale, and it marked R Madhavan's debut in Bollywood. Madhavan was already known from TV shows like Banegi Apni Baat and films like Alai Payuthey. Dia recalled that the long hours and fast schedules were overwhelming for a newcomer, but Mr Bhagnani was a supportive producer who backed what he believed in. Neither Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein nor Deewaanapan succeeded at the box office initially, but the former gained a cult following over time.
Missing Collaborations and Criticism
Dia expressed sadness that no filmmaker has cast her and Madhavan together again in the twenty five years since. She noted that while people debate the film's plot involving stalking and identity swapping, the story belongs to a different time before mobile phones existed. She acknowledged that Reena initially rejected Maddy and told him to go to hell, and admitted that if the story were written today, it would be handled very differently.
Context
Nostalgia for 2000s Bollywood cinema often brings cult classics back into public discussions through actor interviews and media retrospectives. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein is a notable example of a movie that failed commercially upon release but later found a massive dedicated fanbase through television broadcasts and digital platforms.
