Insta360 has entered the compact gimbal camera market with the launch of two new devices, the Luna Ultra and the Luna Pro, aimed at solo filmmakers, content creators, and independent journalists. Both models feature a 20-mm equivalent lens with an f/1.8 aperture and a 1-inch sensor, delivering 4K footage and three-axis stabilization. The Luna Ultra, released in June, includes a second zoom lens developed with Leica, while the Luna Pro, released in September, serves as a budget-friendly alternative without the zoom feature, costing $170 less.

Features and Performance

Both cameras support 4K video at 120 frames per second in log format for color grading, alongside a default 10-bit color profile and Insta360's I-Log. The Luna Ultra's telephoto lens uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor with a 3X optical zoom that reaches up to 15X via digital zoom following a firmware update. A detachable front panel houses an OLED screen, control buttons, and a microphone, allowing remote operation from up to 66 feet away. Battery testing yielded two hours and 55 minutes of continuous 4K recording at 24 frames per second at 65 degrees Fahrenheit, though the battery is not replaceable.

Market Context

Insta360 and rival manufacturer DJI are currently involved in a US patent lawsuit over these and other camera models. Neither of DJI's competing Osmo Pocket 4 or 4 Pro cameras is officially sold in the US, giving the Insta360 Luna series an advantage regarding local support, registration, and warranties. Meanwhile, Insta360's durable X6 camera remains an alternative for users who require 360-degree capture or waterproof action footage.

Context

Compact gimbal cameras combine motorized physical stabilization with small camera bodies to produce smooth tracking shots without requiring heavy equipment. These devices have become standard tools for digital creators who work independently without a dedicated camera operator.
