British Comedy Film The State of Us Secures UK Cinema Release

The British coming-of-age comedy film "The State of Us" is heading to U.K. cinemas in 2027 after securing a distribution deal with Vertigo Releasing.

Cast and Creators

The movie stars Samuel Bottomley and Callum Scott Howells, alongside Safia Oakley-Green, Seamus O'Hara, Sunetra Sarker, and Frances Barber. It marks the directorial debut of Jake Harvey and Ollie Gardner, with Harvey also writing the script. Pippa Cross, Dylan Rees, and Harvey produced the feature, while Tom Ogden of the indie band Blossoms composed the original music.

Plot and Premiere

The story takes place over a single night and follows nineteen-year-old Frankie as he helps his dying friend Taylor escape from a hospice to watch fireworks from a hilltop. The feature had its world premiere in the main competition at the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this year and will also screen at the Rome Film Festival.

Context

Independent British films often rely on festival debuts at events like Edinburgh and Rome to secure theatrical distribution deals with companies like Vertigo Releasing. Such regional releases help build early audience momentum months ahead of wider cinema rollouts.
