Understanding Visual Snow Syndrome And Its Brain-Related Causes

People with visual snow syndrome see tiny flickering dots across their entire field of vision, similar to the static on an old television screen. These dots stay visible even when a person looks away, and the condition can also cause light sensitivity, trouble seeing at night, and lingering afterimages. Dr Sheetal Goyal, a consultant neurologist at Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central, explains that this static is persistent and continuous, unlike ordinary eye floaters or temporary migraine aura.
Symptoms And Diagnosis
Routine eye tests often show normal results because the eyes themselves are healthy. The root cause is linked to how the brain processes visual information rather than a physical eye problem. To receive a formal diagnosis, the characteristic static-like disturbance must generally continue without stopping for at least three months alongside other required visual symptoms, and a specialist must rule out other causes through proper medical evaluation.
Treatment And Context
Treatment aims to lessen the impact of symptoms and manage related issues like migraines or anxiety using approaches such as tinted lenses or specific medications, though results vary for each person. The condition frequently begins during childhood or adolescence, though individuals often only seek medical help during their teenage years or twenties when the visual disturbances begin to disrupt daily life.
