German Voters Cast Ballots in Regional Elections Testing Chancellor Merz

Voters in Berlin and the north-eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are casting their ballots in local elections on Sunday. These regional votes could increase the political pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Recent opinion polls indicate that the Christian Democratic Union, led by Merz, faces the risk of damaging defeats. Such losses would raise further questions regarding the political future of the chancellor. These elections follow a major victory achieved by the far-right Alternative for Germany party in the state of Saxony-Anhalt two weeks ago.
