Renault has added a new strong-hybrid powertrain to the Duster SUV lineup, joining the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. The hybrid variant keeps the general design of the petrol models, featuring eyebrow-shaped LED daytime running lamps, chunky body cladding, roof rails, C-pillar-mounted door handles, and a 212mm ground clearance. Visual differences include an illuminated Duster grille badge, E-Tech Hybrid logos on the front doors and tailgate, frequency-dependent dampers, and a slightly smaller boot space. Inside, the hybrid copies the dual-screen dashboard and centre console e-shifter from the turbo-petrol versions, but brings unique upholstery choices like black with grey stitching on Evolution, Desert Beige semi-leatherette on Techno, and Dune Brown leatherette on Emotion, along with smaller headrests.

Performance And Fuel Economy

The hybrid setup pairs a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors consisting of a 20hp generator and a 49hp driving motor, backed by a 1.4kWh battery and a multi-mode automatic gearbox. It puts out a combined 160hp and 172Nm of torque, while the turbo-petrol options offer up to 100hp from the 1.0-litre unit and 163hp with 280Nm from the 1.3-litre unit. The hybrid system automatically shifts between six operating modes, letting the car run on pure electric power for up to 80 percent of city driving and complete the zero to 100kph sprint in a claimed 9.61 seconds. ARAI-claimed mileage reaches 29kpl for the hybrid, which is significantly higher than the 19.41kpl for the 1.0-litre manual, 17.75kpl for the 1.3-litre manual, and 18.45kpl for the 1.3-litre DCT automatic. Both powertrain types feature a 50-litre fuel tank, with Renault claiming a total driving range of over 1,400km on a full tank for the hybrid.

Pricing And Features

The Duster hybrid is sold in Evolution, Techno, and Emotion trims, priced at Rs 16.99 lakh, Rs 18.99 lakh, and Rs 19.49 lakh respectively, with introductory prices covering deliveries up to December 31, 2026. The turbo-petrol range starts from Rs 10.49 lakh for the Authentic manual up to Rs 18.49 lakh for the Iconic DCT. While top-end hybrid trims get ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, and a 10.25-litre digital driver's display, the top turbo-petrol Iconic model uniquely includes a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS features that the hybrid misses out on.

Context

Strong-hybrid vehicles combine a traditional internal combustion engine with larger electric motors and batteries than standard mild-hybrids, allowing them to drive on pure electric power for short distances and deliver much higher city fuel efficiency. Automakers like Renault are introducing these options to help buyers cut down on daily fuel costs while avoiding the immediate charging infrastructure needs of fully electric cars.
