Borrowing Down
Tamil Nadu has cut its borrowing for development projects by 21 percent in the first half of the current financial year. The period covers April to September of the 2026-27 financial year. Borrowing dropped from 51,300 crore rupees during the same period last year to 40,500 crore rupees this year.
Rank Change
With this drop, Tamil Nadu moved down from second place to fifth place on the list of states that borrow the most in the country. Maharashtra now holds the top spot. Andhra Pradesh is in second place, Telangana in third, and Rajasthan is in fourth.
Reasons And Next Steps
Better tax income, the Goods and Services Tax, and steady tax share funds from the central government helped lower the need for loans. Even with this drop in the first half, the state plans to borrow 48,000 crore rupees in the third quarter between October and December.
Context
State governments often borrow money from the market through bonds to fund infrastructure and public works. Changes in their overall debt rankings depend on their revenue collections and how much they spend on development compared to other states.
