Persistent stiffness in the back, neck, hips or knees can be a warning sign of an underlying musculoskeletal problem, says orthopaedic specialist Dr Arun Partani, director of orthopaedics at CK Birla Hospitals, Jaipur.
Causes
Stiffness may come from muscle strain, poor posture, prolonged sitting or lack of activity. It can also stem from joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon problems, joint inflammation, degenerative changes in the spine or other spinal disorders.
When to Seek Help
If stiffness recurs, lasts for a long time, or makes everyday tasks like walking, climbing stairs, turning the neck or lifting difficult, it needs an orthopaedic check. Warning signs include joint swelling, pain that limits movement, or stiffness that radiates with numbness, tingling or weakness, suggesting possible nerve involvement.
Management
A doctor will review symptoms, medical history and daily routines, then examine joint movement, muscle strength, tenderness and posture. X‑rays or MRI may be ordered, but only when needed. Treatment is chosen based on clinical findings and can include medication, physiotherapy, activity modification or further tests, aiming to address the root cause and restore comfortable movement.
Context
Stiffness is common, but its cause varies widely; a proper clinical exam is essential to separate age‑related wear from treatable conditions and to guide safe exercise and activity choices.
