West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the Purba Bardhaman district on Tuesday to meet the relatives of a mother and her child who lost their lives in a recent stampede. He handed over twenty-five lakh rupees as financial relief to the family. The victims were thirty-seven-year-old Togor Bej and her fourteen-year-old son, Sandip Bej. The Chief Minister spoke to the grieving relatives at their home in the Madhavdighi area and promised them all possible help from the government. During the visit, he expressed his sorrow directly to the family, noting that no amount of money could bring back the dead or fully ease their pain. Following this visit, the Chief Minister planned to travel to the Hooghly district to meet the family of Piyali Pramanik, another person who died in the same incident. The tragic crush happened on Saturday evening at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, leaving nineteen people dead and twenty-five others injured.
Context
Mass gatherings during major festivals like Durga Puja often pose massive crowd control challenges in urban spaces across India. State governments typically announce financial compensation to help grieving families manage sudden tragedies following such accidents. Large crowds moving through narrow pandal entrances remain a major safety concern for local organizers and police forces.
