Science teacher Maria Joseph has spent nearly two decades at Kangeyanur Panchayat Union Middle School near Villupuram helping rural students build a strong interest in science through hands-on learning, astronomy, and competitions. Joseph joined the school in 2006 to develop scientific thinking among students, overcoming early challenges by finding sponsors for practical activities. These efforts led three students to a national INSPIRE science event in New Delhi in 2011 after winning at block, district, and State levels, while Class VIII students also took part in the Indian Science Congress in 2019. Another project through the Children's Science Congress examined how brick kilns affect agricultural land, which won selection at the State level and reached a national event in New Delhi. Over twenty students from the school have been selected through INSPIRE over the years. Headmistress T. Punithavathi noted that combining deep classroom teaching with regular practical sessions helps rural students understand science better. The school also runs a Junior Red Cross band featuring five musical instruments, believed to be the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu.
Context
Practical science outreach in rural Indian schools helps bridge the opportunity gap by introducing students to experiments and equipment they might not otherwise encounter. Programs like INSPIRE and the Children's Science Congress offer platforms for young students to showcase projects beyond their local districts.
