Tamil actor Monal Naval worked in the film industry for only two years before her death on April 14, 2002. She was just 21 years old at the time and was the younger sister of renowned actor Simran.
Life and Career
After completing her schooling in Delhi, Monal attended college in Mumbai, where she worked as a model and won the Miss Bombay title. She also studied at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Academy acting school. Her biggest dream when entering cinema was to act alongside Shah Rukh Khan. She made her acting debut in the Shivarajkumar-led Kannada film Indradhanush in 2000. Her Tamil debut came with Paarvai Ondre Pothume in 2001. She gained wider recognition through PA Arun Prasad's film Badri, starring opposite actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay as his girlfriend. Her other film credits include Lovely, Samudhiram, Maa Tujhhe Salaam, Charlie Chaplin, and Pesadha Kannum Pesume, while her long-delayed thriller Aadhikkam released posthumously in 2005.
Death and Allegations
Monal died by suicide at her home in Chennai and could not be saved despite being rushed to a hospital. Following her death, Simran held a press conference and alleged that Monal was driven to the extreme step by her former boyfriend, a dancer named Prasanna, after he ended their live-in relationship. Simran also claimed that a famous actor and her manager stole a personal diary and a makeup kit worth Rs 50,000 from the residence, though the allegation was never proven. Prasanna later became a well-known award-winning choreographer. Simran admitted in an interview last year that she did not attend her sister's funeral because she could not bear to see her body. Actor Kunal, who starred opposite Monal in her first and last Tamil films, also died by suicide in 2008.
