Adani Total Gas Ltd shares jumped nearly 13 percent to reach 660.7 rupees on Friday, backed by a trading volume of 39 million shares that marks the highest level since May 27, 2026. The stock later cooled off by 3 percent on Monday, while the exact trigger for this sudden spike in price and volume remains unclear. Even with a lower consolidated net profit of 656 crore rupees in fiscal year 2026 compared to rivals like Indraprastha Gas Ltd at 1,390 crore rupees and Mahanagar Gas Ltd at 850 crore rupees, Adani Total Gas holds a market capitalization of roughly 70,000 crore rupees. This value stands far above Indraprastha Gas at nearly 20,800 crore rupees and Mahanagar Gas at 10,600 crore rupees. Consequently, the stock trades at a price-to-earnings multiple exceeding 100 based on both fiscal year 2026 earnings and estimated fiscal year 2027 earnings.
Business Factors
The company benefits from strong backing by the Adani group and France's TotalEnergies, which hold equal stakes of 37.4 percent each. TotalEnergies ranks as the world's second-largest private player in the liquefied natural gas market, assisting in the strategic sourcing of imported natural gas which made up 38 percent of the required supply in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, with the remainder sourced domestically. However, this partnership does not translate into a pricing advantage for blended gas costs. Adani Total Gas recorded a blended cost of gas of 48 rupees per standard cubic meter in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, compared to 43 rupees for Indraprastha Gas and 40 rupees for Mahanagar Gas. This higher cost pushed the gross margin down to 14.6 rupees per standard cubic meter, marking its lowest point in at least nine quarters.
Market Position
The key advantage for Adani Total Gas lies in its wider and less-penetrated geographical footprint, spanning 53 geographies across 125 districts, which includes 19 geographies held through joint ventures with Indian Oil Corp. By comparison, Indraprastha Gas operates across 12 areas covering 32 districts, while Mahanagar Gas has the smallest footprint across 8 areas including Mumbai, Greater Mumbai, and Raigad, alongside locations in Maharashtra and Karnataka. While rivals dominate metro cities and adjoining areas that face near-saturation, Adani Total Gas operates in wider regions. Its revenues remain less than half of Indraprastha Gas, yet investors may be moving away from Indraprastha Gas due to Delhi-NCR's clean transportation policy, which currently targets a shift from compressed natural gas to electric commercial transport with potential future curbs on passenger vehicles.
