Hrithik Shokeen Claims Maiden Five-Wicket Haul as Delhi Secures Draw Against Gujarat in Ranji Trophy

Delhi off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen claimed his first-ever five-wicket haul in professional cricket during a drawn Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat at Air Force Ground B in Palam. Shokeen finished with figures of 5 for 143 across 53 overs on a flat pitch where bowlers from both sides struggled for breakthroughs. Gujarat had started day four at 363 for 5, needing 286 runs for the first-innings lead. Manan Hingrajia fell after a painstaking knock lasting 303 balls and nearly eight hours, while captain Chintan Gaja scored 82 runs before getting out. Delhi eventually enforced the follow-on, and the match ended in a draw after Gujarat reached 15 for 1 in their second innings. The result earned Delhi three points for the match, aiding their recovery after an opening-round loss to Bengal, while Gujarat took one point. For Shokeen, the milestone comes after years of limited action following his T20 debut for the Mumbai Indians in 2022. The arrival of the Impact Player rule and a stress fracture in his back had limited him to just two Ranji matches last season and 10 professional matches in the last 22 months. Shokeen credited his recovery and improved bowling action to hard work on his follow-through and line-up with the help of Vijay Dahiya.

Context

The Ranji Trophy is India's premier domestic first-class cricket championship, played between various state and regional teams over four-day matches. Pitches that favor batsmen heavily, often referred to as flat tracks or dead wickets, frequently result in high scores and hard-working spells for bowlers. Teams earn points based on first-innings leads and outright wins, which determine standings in the group stage.
