Dr Kunal Sood, a physician in anesthesiology and interventional pain medicine based in Maryland, shared this guidance in an online post on September 20. During the first two years of life, a child's brain grows at a very fast pace, and fat helps build brain cell membranes while supporting the process of wrapping nerve fibers in a protective myelin sheath. This biological process helps brain signals travel efficiently through the nervous system. Omega-3 fatty acids like DHA are particularly crucial because they support both brain and eye development.
Best Food Sources
Including fat in a baby's diet does not mean adding heavy amounts of butter to every meal. Parents should focus on offering a variety of safe, age-appropriate foods that naturally contain fat. Recommended food items include avocados, eggs, full-fat yogurt, and nut or seed butters prepared in a safe way for infants. Additional healthy fat sources include olive oil and low-mercury fatty fish such as salmon, while breast milk or infant formula provides most of the necessary fat during the first year of life.
