Top SUV Rankings

The Tata Punch claimed the number one spot among compact SUVs with 1,23,287 units sold, registering a massive 68 percent year-on-year growth that marked the highest percentage increase in the top ten list. Tata's diverse powertrain strategy featuring petrol, CNG, and electric versions supported these sales alongside a facelift introduced in January 2026. The Tata Nexon trailed closely behind in second place with 1,11,919 units sold, achieving a 25 percent growth rate. The Maruti Fronx secured third place with 1,10,135 units sold and a 43 percent increase, while the Maruti Brezza dropped 5 percent to 80,516 units. Additional top ten performers included the Hyundai Venue at 68,836 units, the Kia Sonet at 56,929 units, the Mahindra XUV 3XO at 52,851 units, the Mahindra Bolero at 51,720 units, the Hyundai Exter at 46,156 units, and the Mahindra Thar three-door model at 25,424 units.

Market Outlook

The top ten compact SUV models combined for 7,27,773 units, dominating 89 percent of the total category volume for the past six months. According to industry tracking, these figures represent 55 percent of the record 14,73,422 units sold across the entirety of FY2026. Supported by high double-digit growth rates, the ongoing festive season, and strong momentum for zero-emission vehicles, the segment is projected to surpass the 15 lakh milestone for the first time in a single fiscal year during FY2027.

As consumer preferences shift steadily away from traditional hatchbacks and sedans toward rugged, higher-riding body styles, compact SUVs continue to drive the bulk of volume growth across the domestic passenger vehicle market.
