Market Shift
India's artificial intelligence market faces a changing financial landscape as demand moves toward debt funding for data centres and computing infrastructure over the next three to five years. A new report by Union Bank of India highlights that while the sector is growing, it deals with major risks like the fast-paced obsolescence of graphics processing units every 18 to 24 months, unclear revenue models, and changing governance rules.
Growth Drivers And Strengths
Strong growth in the market stems from an expanding base of internet and smartphone users alongside rising adoption of generative AI by businesses. India currently has 880 to 900 million internet users with a goal of reaching 1.2 billion by 2030, while smartphone users stand at 700 to 750 million. Generative AI is now part of more than 60 per cent of large IT deals. The report notes that India holds the world's largest tech talent pool and some of the highest global mobile data traffic, though the country still lags behind in local compute infrastructure and foundational models compared to nations like the US and China.
Financing And Recommendations
Different parts of the AI ecosystem rely on distinct funding sources. Computing infrastructure requires high capital through structured debt and hyperscaler funding, while foundational models depend on venture capital, private equity, and government grants. AI software applications attract venture debt and revenue-based financing, and skilling centres rely on CSR funding and public-private partnerships. The lender recommends creating structured equipment-financing products for GPU clusters and expanding venture-debt partnerships.
Context
As artificial intelligence technologies grow rapidly around the world, building the physical infrastructure to support them requires massive financial investments. Computing hardware like graphics processing units and data storage facilities need constant upgrades, which is why debt financing and specialized loans are becoming crucial for long-term industry expansion.

What Happened
A report from Union Bank of India details how the country's AI sector is growing rapidly due to massive internet usage and enterprise adoption, but it faces unique financial and structural hurdles.
Why It Matters
Financing artificial intelligence requires heavy capital investment because underlying hardware like graphics processing units become outdated every 18 to 24 months. Understanding where the money comes from—ranging from debt financing for data centres to venture capital for applications—helps industry stakeholders navigate regulatory uncertainties and infrastructure gaps.
What Happens Next
Over the next three to five years, financial demand is expected to shift heavily toward debt funding for data centres and computing infrastructure, prompting financial institutions to develop specialized equipment-financing products.
