Bitcoin delivered the highest return among major asset classes over a five-year period between October 2021 and October 2026, though gold and stocks also recorded notable gains.

Asset Returns

Bitcoin recorded a 183 percent gain, rising from about $29,000 to roughly $82,600, while achieving an annualised return of about 23.1 percent. The crypto asset faced a steep decline during the 2022 crypto winter due to tighter monetary policies and business failures, but later recovered following higher institutional participation, the launch of US spot Bitcoin ETFs, and the 2024 halving event. Gold secured the second-highest return with a 131 percent increase, moving from approximately $1,796 to around $4,142 an ounce, driven by inflation worries, geopolitical tension, and central bank reserve diversification. Meanwhile, India's Nifty 50 index rose 26 percent from around 18,115 to 22,624, with an annualised return of about 4.7 percent following a strong post-pandemic rally and later market consolidation.

Expert Views

Daniel Munday, Principal Analyst at VT Markets, noted that yields and the US Federal Reserve drive all three asset classes. Munday pointed out that high yields and rate expectations weigh on equities and cap gold prices, while Bitcoin trades near $84,000 with strong ETF inflows but remains tied to equity movements. Additionally, PL Wealth advises phased exposure to large and large-mid-cap strategies in the near term because of high crude oil prices and global interest rate uncertainty, while preferring large private banks and capital goods for the medium term.

Context

Investors typically balance different asset classes to manage overall risk rather than relying on a single option. While high-return assets like cryptocurrency carry heavy price swings, traditional safe havens and equities offer long-term economic exposure and stability.
