The Indian government has made Bureau of Indian Standards certification compulsory for smartphone screen protectors. Under a notification issued on September 21, companies must secure this regulatory approval before selling screen protectors in the country. The rule becomes effective from April 1, 2027, under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods Order of 2021. Screen protectors are now the 66th item added to this schedule, joining products like smartphones, laptops, chargers, and televisions. This move aims to stop the sale of low-quality products and support local makers. Industry leaders have welcomed the decision. Ashok Gupta, executive chairman of Optiemus Infracom, stated that the company is expanding its manufacturing capabilities with an added capacity of two crore units. Optiemus has set up a production unit in Noida using technology from U.S. firm Corning and plans to start shipments in January 2027. The company expects a revenue of eighteen hundred to two thousand crore rupees this financial year from this business. Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the mobile device makers body ICEA, noted that the annual market has over fifty crore units. He added that the new certification will build a quality-driven industry worth twelve thousand to sixteen thousand crore rupees, create about sixty thousand jobs, and bring in two thousand crore rupees in GST revenue. The domestic market for tempered glass screen protectors was estimated at forty crore pieces with a retail value of twenty thousand crore rupees in 2025.
