The Congress party's student wing, the NSUI, failed to win a single post in the Delhi University Students Union elections, drawing a blank for the first time since 2015. The rival ABVP won three out of the four central panel positions in the polls.
Leadership Questions
Rahul Gandhi's office has asked Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal for a detailed report explaining the total defeat. The high command is demanding answers about how election tickets were given, why rebel candidates split the vote, and why Vir Chatrath—the son of Congress leader Manish Chatrath—was chosen for the vice-president role, a contest where he ended up in third place. Dissatisfaction has also targeted Kanhaiya Kumar, with critics inside the party alleging he stayed away from campus and made decisions without talking to student leaders.
Rebel Success And Outreach
Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, a former NSUI member who ran as a rebel, won the vice-president seat by a margin of over 13,000 votes. This defeat happened on the exact same day Rahul Gandhi addressed a large gathering at his Chhatron Ki Goonj youth outreach event in Indore, which is the fifth edition of a nationwide campaign planned for over 800 cities. Political analyst Chandrachur Singh noted that while large crowds turn up for such rallies, translating that energy into actual votes requires strong ground work.
