Political parties in Uttar Pradesh are preparing for upcoming elections to ten Rajya Sabha seats on October 16, followed by MLC elections to eleven seats from Graduates' and Teachers' constituencies a week later. These polls offer parties a chance to test their electoral math, organization, and alliances ahead of the Assembly election battle early next year. The BJP and its allies hold a strong position in the state Assembly. The BJP has 256 MLAs, and with its allies, the total reaches 292 seats. The NDA also has the support of two MLAs from the Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik), bringing its total strength to 294. Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party has 101 MLAs and the Congress has two, giving the SP-Congress bloc a strength of 103. Based on these numbers, the BJP-led alliance can secure eight of the ten Rajya Sabha seats, while the SP and Congress can win two. However, cross-voting and abstentions could change the final outcome. The numbers also matter for the BSP, which currently has no MLAs in the Assembly, and whose sole MP Ramji Gautam is nearing the end of his term. If the BJP decides to help a BSP candidate win, the ruling alliance would have to give up one of its own seats to accommodate that candidate. For the BJP, the election is a test of managing its large majority while deciding whether to assist the BSP's return to the Upper House. For the SP, the contest is a test of its ability to hold on to its two-seat share. Ten MPs are completing their terms in November. Hardeep Singh Puri is a 74-year-old second-term Rajya Sabha MP and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas. Arun Singh is a 61-year-old second-term MP and former BJP national general secretary. Geeta Shakya is a 56-year-old first-time MP from the Shakya community who serves as state BJP general secretary. Neeraj Shekhar is a 57-year-old three-term MP and son of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. Brij Lal is a 71-year-old former IPS officer and former UP DGP who joined the BJP in 2015. B L Verma is a 65-year-old Union Minister of State and leader from the Lodh community. Seema Dwivedi is a 54-year-old first-time MP and three-time former MLA. Dinesh Sharma vacated his seat after being appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Ram Gopal Yadav is an 80-year-old five-time Rajya Sabha MP and key strategist for the Samajwadi Party. Ramji Gautam is the 50-year-old lone BSP representative in Parliament whose term is ending.
