A physical or digital health card acts as the official identity at the hospital desk, linking directly to the insurance policy for instant verification.
How Claims Work
When a patient is admitted, the hospital sends a pre-authorisation request to the Third-Party Administrator or insurer. Planned medical procedures are usually approved a day or two in advance. For emergencies, hospitals begin treatment right away and file the authorisation within 24 hours under IRDAI rules.
Network and Reimbursement
Cashless claims only work within the insurer's approved hospital network, making it necessary to check the list before an emergency happens. Network lists can change by city and plan, and some insurers like Niva Bupa allow searches by PIN code. Reimbursement serves as the backup option for treatment at any hospital, but it requires paying the bill first and waiting weeks to get the money back.
Common Claim Mistakes
Most claim issues happen due to avoidable errors. These include assuming every big hospital is automatically cashless, forgetting the health card, failing to update personal details after a renewal, and ignoring room-rent sub-limits that can turn a cashless claim into a partially out-of-pocket expense.
