India is close to finding a settled batting lineup for Test matches across all conditions, according to head coach Gautam Gambhir. The team has recently gone through a period where several senior players retired, leading to struggles in scoring enough runs, especially during home matches. However, Gambhir believes that strong performances from young players like Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel show that the team is filling those empty spaces.
Lineup and Strategy
Gambhir stated that Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are largely settled as the two openers. He also pointed out that Padikkal did very well in Sri Lanka, the team has fixed numbers four and five, and Jurel recently scored a century. While white-ball cricket allows for changing players based on conditions, Gambhir stressed the need for stability in Test cricket. He explained that Test players need the right technique to adapt everywhere, avoiding constant changes.
Bowling Strength
Gambhir added that India has a strong bowling attack capable of taking 20 wickets in any part of the world, provided everyone stays fit. Because of this bowling depth, he noted that the full responsibility falls on the batsmen to put enough runs on the board. India's home season starts with a three-match ODI series against the West Indies beginning September 27, followed by matches against Zimbabwe, a tour of New Zealand for two Tests, and a five-match home Test series against Australia.
