Police booked 16 cases against people involved in violence during the filing of nominations across 13 districts in the State on Thursday, according to Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta.

Details of Violence

Authorities recorded a total of 31 incidents, which included eight in Anantapur district and three each in Annamayya, Kadapa, Tirupati, and Prakasam districts. In 16 of these incidents, nomination papers were destroyed, snatched, or torn. Stone pelting and attacks took place in six incidents, while four vehicles were set on fire and two houses suffered damage. A police constable, a contesting candidate, and a few others sustained injuries during the stone pelting and clashes.

Police Action

Police have identified 54 trouble makers linked to the poll violence, and search operations are underway to track down the remaining suspects. The DGP has instructed Superintendents of Police and Police Commissioners to find everyone involved in the clashes and stone pelting, and to file cases against them under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other legal provisions.

Context

Election nomination periods in many regions occasionally see local political tensions flare up into public disorder and clashes between rival groups.
