Bihar votes in biennial elections to eight seats of the Legislative Council today, with the Patna Graduates' seat drawing the most attention due to an internal party clash. Voting takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. across four Graduates' and four Teachers' constituencies, and counting is scheduled for October 27 before current terms end on November 16.

High-Stakes Contest

JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar is running for a fourth consecutive term from the Patna Graduates' seat. The contest gained high tension after JD(U) MLA Anant Singh from Mokama openly backed Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Kumar Singh. Mr. Anant stated that Mr. Neeraj had opposed him during past Assembly elections in Mokama.

Party Efforts

Before the vote, JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha and MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh met with Mr. Neeraj behind closed doors. The party previously tried to resolve the dispute through Munger MP and Union Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, who noted that Mr. Anant held unresolved grievances that the party should have addressed sooner. Meanwhile, top leaders including former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha visited Mr. Neeraj in a private hospital earlier this week after he was admitted for heart-related issues on Monday. He was discharged on Wednesday.
