Plot and Characters

The ongoing historical Chinese drama Where the Mask Ends is drawing attention for its tale of mistaken identities and family secrets. Directed by Yang Long, the series stars Tian Xiwei and Yan An, a former member of the K-pop group Pentagon. Adapted from the web novel Jia Jin Chai by Xiao Jia Ren, the story centres on a young woman named A Chou who has little to her name. She takes the place of Wei Rao, a wealthy noblewoman with a cruel streak, after Wei Rao refuses to marry Lu Zhuo, the seriously ill heir to the Duke's household.

Manor Dangers and Alliances

A Chou hopes to protect her mother through the dangerous arrangement, but life inside the Duke's manor proves difficult. Lu Zhuo holds her responsible for past misdeeds, including an attempt to push Xie Hua Lou from a height. Meanwhile, the real Wei Rao goes by Jun Dai and plots from a hot spring estate. A Chou survives a poisoning attempt by Governess Wu and saves Lu Zhuo's younger cousin Lu Che from a fall. A Chou and Lu Zhuo eventually strike a deal to pretend to be a happy couple for a year. Later, A Chou discovers she is not a lookalike but the biological daughter of the Wei family, abandoned sixteen years ago by Aunt Wei Heng E and Lady Li.
