The luxury Golden Chariot train has sold out all 75 seats for its opening journey of the 2026-27 season, marking a full house for the first time since its revival. Seventy-five guests embarked on the trip on Saturday, including travelers from across the country and from Spain, according to a senior Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation official.
Upgrades And Routes
For the new season, the train has been revamped with redesigned rooms featuring both a living room and a bedroom. The food menu now includes Jain and gluten-free choices across two onboard restaurants named Ruchi and Nalapaka, alongside an onboard bar called Madira. The kitchen has also been modernised with a combi oven, high-capacity induction systems, and an upgraded RO water purification plant, while a service team of over 60 members has received special training. This year features 13 planned luxury journeys, split into seven Pride of Karnataka trips, three Glimpses of Karnataka trips, and three Jewels of Karnataka trips. The first Pride of Karnataka trip departed from Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station to visit Mysuru, the Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary, Halebeedu, Chikkamagalur, Hampi, and Goa before returning to Bengaluru on day six.
Background
Originally launched in 2008, the Golden Chariot was discontinued in 2018 before the incumbent regime relaunched it in 2024. The 2024 and 2025 seasons saw slim demand before this year's complete booking. Tourism Minister K.J. George inspected the train at Cantonment Railway Station alongside Tourism Department and IRCTC officials, noting that the goal is to offer world-class hospitality and position the train strongly in domestic and international premium tourism markets.
Context
Luxury tourist trains in India combine heritage rail travel with high-end hospitality to attract affluent domestic and foreign travelers. Revamping onboard amenities and catering to diverse dietary needs are common strategies used to revive historic tourism properties after periods of low demand.
