UN Debate
India strongly criticized Pakistan at the United Nations on Thursday, pointing out its hypocrisy in discussing faith and religious freedom. First Secretary Bhavika Mangalanandan reminded the global body that Pakistan refused to accept the bodies of its own soldiers killed during the 1999 Kargil war. The Indian Army instead recovered those soldiers and buried them with military honours according to Islamic traditions.
Kashmir And Minorities
Speaking during an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion and belief, Nazila Ghanea, the Indian diplomat rejected criticism over funeral rights in Jammu and Kashmir. She stated that Pakistan has no right to lecture India while minorities continue to shrink and face regular abuse under its own illegal occupation in areas like Rawalakot. She also criticized the UN report for advocating for the rights of terrorists who violate the right to life without showing similar concern for victims of terrorism, noting that legal limits on funeral rights should align with sovereign rights.
Context
Diplomatic exchanges at the United Nations frequently involve sharp exchanges between India and Pakistan over regional security and human rights issues in Jammu and Kashmir. Special Rapporteurs are independent experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council to examine specific human rights themes globally.
