Federal Crackdown in California Targets Immigrants Over Voter Registration

Reported by one source so far
Federal authorities in California have charged more than two dozen legal permanent residents in a major crackdown on voter registration and voting by noncitizens.
Details of the Cases
The Department of Justice filed charges in 10 of the 28 total cases by Thursday morning, utilizing voter registration data to bring broader criminal charges linked to immigration status. Most of the targeted immigrants have lived in the United States for at least five years, and some for decades. Many had applied for U.S. citizenship and now face serious charges for lying on forms or during interviews, which could result in years in prison and block their path to naturalization. Among those charged is Amandeep Kaur, whose husband Kulwinder Singh stated she mistakenly returned a ballot in 2024 after taking a driver's license test in Hindi. Another defendant, 42-year-old José Antonio Bañuelos-Díaz, was arrested outside his Los Angeles home after living in the country for 40 years, though he stated he never voted and did not know he was registered. Homeland Security agents also arrested Pamele Arbues Line in San Diego following her naturalization interview, after documents alleged she registered to vote five times and submitted ballots while believing her mother's past citizenship covered her.
Penalties and Official Stance
Immigrants convicted of illegally voting face up to a year in prison, while those convicted of lying on citizenship applications face up to a decade. The Justice Department stated that six individuals face misdemeanor charges for voting as a noncitizen, while 22 face felony charges. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that the voting rights of American citizens must be protected.
Context
These arrests form part of a broader federal effort to scrutinize voter rolls and immigration records. At the same time, the federal government has sued California over voter citizenship verification, and naturalization approvals nationwide have slowed down significantly compared to previous years.
