A nineteen-year-old driving an SUV under the influence of alcohol struck a car and hit a power pole on the Hyderabad-Warangal National Highway on Thursday.
The Incident
The crash took place around half past six in the morning close to the Medipally area on the elevated roadway. The fast-moving SUV hit the back of a small car carrying a married couple, causing it to flip over multiple times. The impact also knocked down a utility pole directly onto the vehicle. Both occupants, thirty-year-old Sai Shiva and his twenty-eight-year-old wife Meghana, sustained injuries and were moved to a private hospital in Chaitanyapuri for medical care.
Police Action
Officers identified the driver as Akun Sabharwal, whose blood alcohol test showed a level of two hundred thirty-eight milligrams per one hundred millilitres, which is nearly eight times the legal limit. Investigators found he had no valid driving permit, and the SUV he drove carried a temporary tag along with a fake license plate. Medipally Inspector D. Jalender Reddy stated that the incident involved ten separate violations under road transport and criminal laws. Police arrested Akun and also filed a case against the vehicle owner, Mangilal, for handing the keys to an unlicensed driver.
Context
Festival holidays often lead to empty morning roads that tempt motorists to drive at dangerous speeds. Strict checks by local traffic authorities aim to curb such severe road safety violations.
