Emergency Advice
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has advised people across the UK to stock up on tinned food and bottled water to prepare for unexpected crises. Government recommendations suggest households keep three days' worth of non-perishable food and nine litres of water per person. Speaking at a wildfire resilience summit in Liverpool, Burnham stated that unexpected events are becoming more common. The guidelines follow recent storms hitting the country and online disruption caused by a major security flaw. Other recommended items include an FM radio, torches, hand sanitiser, a power bank and cash.
Political Reaction
Housing Secretary Angela Rayner previously joked that her emergency box would include mascara and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc wine. Responding to this, Burnham said he would stick to basics like beans, soup and Twiglets. Meanwhile, Treasury minister James Murray admitted he has not yet followed all the government's guidance himself, though he noted neighbouring countries like Ireland, France and the Netherlands have given similar advice for a long time. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch stated she is stocked up for the week, but criticized the government for failing to properly explain the risks or outline actions on defence and cyber attacks.
Context
Official reports warn that Britain's food supply chain faces growing risks from climate change and cyber threats. Governments routinely issue emergency preparedness checklists to help citizens cope with short-term disruptions caused by severe weather or technical failures.
