Three major Paris museums including the Louvre are closing on Saturday, October 24, as authorities prepare for planned demonstrations and possible violence in the French capital. France's Culture Ministry confirmed the closures and urged cultural institutions under its authority to protect visitors, staff, and artworks. The decision follows unrest during demonstrations last weekend when fires were set, shop windows were smashed, businesses were looted, and protesters clashed with police. These protests have taken place amid tensions over the rising cost of living in France. Art Basel Paris has also cancelled its Saturday and Sunday programme over security concerns. The contemporary art fair at the Grand Palais features 211 international galleries and opened to the public on Friday, October 23, after two days of invitation-only access. Organisers said the decision prioritises the safety of visitors, exhibitors, staff, and artworks, bringing the public programme to a close early. Meanwhile, separate security incidents involving museum break-ins add to the concerns. Thieves entered the Louvre's Galerie d'Apollon on the morning of October 19, 2025, using a mechanical lift to reach an upper-level window before breaking display cases and escaping on motorbikes with eight items of royal jewellery.

Context

Major cultural institutions often close during periods of urban unrest to prevent damage and ensure public safety. Such security measures help protect invaluable historical artifacts and manage crowd control when civil demonstrations turn volatile.
