The Attack
Six people died and 28 others suffered injuries when two armed men opened fire during a funeral service inside a church in central Jordan on Friday. Between 150 and 200 people were inside the building in the Karak governorate when the assault took place. The attackers arrived in a car, entered the church carrying a rifle and a pistol, and shot at the mourners for several minutes before escaping.
Investigation and Response
Security forces have moved into the area to launch a manhunt for the unidentified suspects. Government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani condemned the incident as a heinous act. A mourner named Khaled Burqan described the chaotic aftermath where bodies lay on the ground. Interior ministry officials are scheduled to hold a news briefing shortly, and no group has claimed responsibility so far.
Context
Karak features a notable Christian community within a predominantly Muslim nation. Violent incidents of this scale happen infrequently in Jordan, though the country has faced fatal attacks in the past.
