Upgraded App
The Union government has introduced an upgraded attendance application for the rural employment programme, Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission, featuring artificial intelligence and new security tools to stop fake entries. Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the changes on Friday, October 23, 2026. The move aims to protect workers' wages and ensure public funds are used transparently.
Security Features
Face authentication was first launched in March 2026 to tackle fake attendance concerns from the earlier MGNREGA scheme. However, officials noted problems like workers using old photographs instead of live images, mismatched worker counts, wrong gender details, and identical pictures appearing in multiple muster rolls. The new system includes liveness detection, anti-tampering tools, and clone protection. It also features a multi-layered verification system with a photo de-duplication module that stops wage lists and fund transfers automatically when suspicious entries are found.
Progress Report
The Minister shared that the scheme was launched on July 1 and currently has 31.23 lakh active worksites. It has provided jobs to more than 3.65 crore workers from 2.89 crore rural households, generating nearly 46 crore person-days so far. Out of these, about 40 crore person-days were recorded using face authentication. The app also allows offline attendance recording in areas with no network and has an exception system for elderly workers, disabled individuals, or device technical problems.
Context
Digital attendance systems in large government employment programmes are designed to prevent leakage and ensure that wages reach genuine beneficiaries directly. Technology updates are frequently introduced when authorities discover workarounds like photo reuse that bypass older software versions. Such administrative measures help manage large-scale welfare spending reaching millions of rural households across different States.
