The sixth Merci market begins its run at Valladolid's Broadway cinemas, bringing together more than 200 film professionals to view 26 upcoming movie releases. The event runs from October 28 to October 30 and gives theater owners an advance look at films scheduled for late 2026 and the first half of 2027. This year's gathering marks the first edition since the death of José Luis Cienfuegos, the director of Valladolid known as the Seminci, who helped build the event. Organized by Valladolid and Adicine, whose 20 member companies make up the vast majority of Spain's independent film distribution sector, the market connects distributors and theater owners to plan release strategies and build business ties. Adicine members previously captured a 12 percent share of Spain's theatrical box office through September 2025, according to Comscore. Following the box office success of "La Bola Negra," handled by Elastica Films, Adicine co-president and Elastica co-founder Enrique Costa estimates that market share could reach 16 to 20 percent by the end of the year. The film has earned more than €29.9 million or $33.5 million, making it Spain's fourth highest-grossing domestic film ever. Other recent domestic successes include "Sundays" and "Sirât," distributed by BTeam Pictures, alongside international titles "Sentimental Value" and "Backrooms" from Elastica. The 2026 lineup features Gerardo Herrero's war thriller "Carta Blanca" from Karma Films, Javier Ruiz Caldera's comedy "5 More Minutes" handled by Filmax, and Florian Zeller's "Bunker" starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. International highlights include Cristian Mungiu's "Fjord" and Beth de Araújo's "Josephine" starring Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan. New festival leadership Javier H. Estrada and Mariona Viader have maintained collaboration with Adicine, and the event will honor Otilio García with the newly named José Luis Cienfuegos Award on October 29.
Context
Independent film markets like Merci help bridge the gap between movie distributors and theater owners who decide which films get screen time. Smaller distributors rely heavily on these organized events to secure vital support from cinemas and streaming buyers like Movistar Plus, Filmin, and HBO.
