Stock markets fell in early trade on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as crude oil prices crossed the one hundred dollar mark per barrel and global trends turned weak. The thirty-share BSE Sensex tanked 632.68 points to reach 74,189.55. The fifty-share NSE Nifty dropped 216.15 points to reach 23,222.55. Heavy selling in banks and non-banking financial companies added to the pressure, alongside weak global markets. Among Sensex firms, Bajaj Finance fell 4.75 percent and Bajaj Finserv dropped 3.49 percent. Axis Bank, InterGlobe Aviation, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and HDFC Bank also saw major losses. On the winning side, Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharma, HCL Tech, ICICI Bank, and Tata Consultancy Services gained ground. Brent crude traded above the one hundred dollar mark at $102.2 per barrel, while the U.S. 10-year bond yield rose to 5.11 percent. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, stated that these global headwinds will weigh on the market and make a smart recovery unlikely for now. Markets also focused on the NSE stock market debut on Thursday. The twenty-two thousand five hundred sixty-nine crore IPO of the National Stock Exchange received a subscription of 5.71 times overall. In international trade, Asian markets showed mixed trends as Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose while Shanghai and Hong Kong fell. U.S. markets closed lower on Wednesday. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that a rebound in crude oil prices driven by uncertainty in the U.S.-Iran diplomatic process and rising U.S. Treasury yields prompted profit-taking. Meanwhile, Foreign Institutional Investors bought equities worth ₹1,617.45 crore on Wednesday, a day after the Sensex had climbed 299.17 points to end at 74,828.25.
