A normal cholesterol report does not guarantee complete heart safety. Dr Sunil Kumar Mandal, senior consultant and interventional cardiologist at Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida, notes that many patients feel shocked by a heart attack after seeing normal test results. Standard lipid panels check total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, but they miss several other factors that shape heart risk.
Three Overlooked Factors
One major factor is Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), a genetic particle that routine lab tests usually omit. Diet and exercise do little to change Lp(a), and it can raise heart risks even when LDL levels look fine. Metabolic health forms the second factor, as insulin resistance, prediabetes, and metabolic syndrome damage blood vessels over time without appearing on standard cholesterol checks. The third factor covers lifestyle and environmental elements. Chronic stress, poor sleep, undiagnosed sleep apnea, smoking, and air pollution all strain the heart and blood vessels independently of cholesterol.
Medical Advice
Dr Mandal advises getting a detailed check-up that goes beyond basic blood tests, especially for people with a family history of heart disease. Anyone experiencing unexplained tiredness, heavy stress, or risks like diabetes and extra waist weight should consult a doctor.
