UPDATE - follow-up to Anti-terror police investigate as one person killed in shooting near Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has described a recent gun attack in a Parisian suburb that left one person dead and five injured as a racist terrorist attack. Macron stated that the incident is a turning point for the nation and has no place in France.

What Happened

Several drive-by shootings occurred on Friday, beginning in Trappes south-west of Paris and moving to nearby La Verrière. The attack lasted nearly 15 minutes, with the gunman firing randomly from a grey Renault Clio at targets including a petrol station, a medical centre, and a playground. Among the injured is a 12-year-old girl who suffered eight gunshot wounds and required surgery, while three victims overall sustained serious injuries.

Investigation and Suspect

The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office, known as PNAT, named the arrested suspect as Kevin T, a 39-year-old with four previous convictions who was known to police but not to intelligence services. PNAT is investigating the case as murder connected to a terrorist enterprise with aggravated circumstances based on race, ethnicity, nation, or religion. A member of the suspect's immediate family was also taken into custody on Friday.

Context

French officials and local leaders have pointed to the victims' backgrounds and the specific targets as indicators of a racist and potentially Islamophobic motive behind the violence. The use of a vehicle for drive-by attacks across multiple neighborhoods highlights the challenges authorities face in securing public spaces against sudden, random acts of firearm violence.
