Appetite Factors

Waking up without an appetite does not automatically mean a person has diabetes or insulin resistance, according to medical experts. Dr Himika Chawla, Senior Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetology at PSRI Hospital, points out that a lack of morning hunger can stem from several everyday influences.

Causes And Sleep

Eating a heavy meal or a snack late at night often leaves a person full the next morning. Natural differences in circadian rhythms, stress levels, sleep quality, and general metabolic patterns also shape individual hunger cycles. Dr Chawla notes that poor sleep interferes with hunger-regulating hormones, though a single late dinner or restless night does not signal a metabolic disorder.

Warning Signs

While a missing breakfast appetite alone is usually harmless if weight and daily nutrition remain stable, persistent changes paired with other signs require medical attention. Key red flags include unexplained weight loss, constant fatigue, extreme thirst, frequent trips to the bathroom, blurry vision, dizziness, sweating, and shaking.

Context

Doctors often use tests like fasting blood glucose and HbA1c to check for underlying conditions when multiple symptoms appear together. While most healthy individuals can simply wait until hunger arrives naturally, patients taking specific diabetes medicines must coordinate their meal times carefully to avoid dangerous blood sugar drops.
