Decoding Indian high-yield dividend stocks beyond headline numbers

High dividend yields can look attractive to investors, but they require careful review because one-off special payouts or past distributions can give a misleading picture of future returns.
Jagran Prakashan
Jagran Prakashan paid a total dividend of ₹ 10 per share for fiscal year 2026, which included a special payout of ₹ 3, giving it a headline yield of 16 percent. The media firm runs Dainik Jagran and holds a 74 percent stake in Music Broadcast, which operates Radio City. The company generated ₹ 230 crore in free cash flow and held a net cash balance above ₹ 1,200 crore, though its quarterly profit fell 9 percent to ₹ 61 crore.
SBI Funds Management
SBI Funds Management stands as India's largest asset management company by quarterly average assets under management, holding ₹ 12.51 trillion as of March 2026. Its high yield comes from a ₹ 70 interim dividend paid in November 2025 and a ₹ 9.60 dividend in March 2026, ahead of its July 2026 stock listing. The firm focuses heavily on passive funds like index funds and exchange-traded funds, which earn lower fees than active equity products.
Expleo Solutions and Vedanta
Expleo Solutions recommended a final dividend of ₹ 110 for fiscal year 2026, yielding 12.25 percent at a share price of ₹ 897, though management warned of shrinking deal sizes due to artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Vedanta offered a 13.79 percent yield based on ₹ 34 in fiscal year 2026 dividends paid on pre-demerger shares. Vedanta's future plans include a USD 270 crore plan to expand output at Zambia's Konkola Copper Mines by 2031.
Context
Income-seeking investors often track dividend yields to find steady cash returns from listed companies. However, a high percentage can sometimes result from a falling share price or a one-time special payout rather than stable ongoing business earnings.
