A New Delhi special executive magistrate has ordered Cockroach Janta Party co‑convener Saurav Das to provide documents that verify his present Delhi residence. The direction was issued on Friday after Das and fellow CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka appeared in court with their sureties. The magistrate observed that the papers filed lacked a rental agreement or lease to confirm Das's address, prompting the request for additional proof. Das’s lawyers asked for more time to collect the missing documents. The magistrate granted the extension and set a review hearing for 17 November, when the newly submitted proof will be examined. Delhi Police counsel Prashant Prakash and officer Bhairav Dass pointed out that Das had not yet shown any evidence of living in Delhi. The police had initially taken preventive action under BNSS sections 126 and 170, fearing a possible breach of peace. The case originates from an incident on 12 October when Das and Ranka climbed a gate and entered the restricted Jantar Mantar protest area. Their entry occurred amid wider demonstrations demanding action against the Chief Election Commissioner over alleged irregularities in the SIR. After a week in judicial custody, both leaders were released on 21 October after posting personal and surety bonds of ₹50,000 each. The court’s release conditions required written undertakings to keep peace, avoid protests at Jantar Mantar until the site is officially re‑notified, and to respect the Constitution. ## Context The special executive magistrate handles urgent matters such as bail and peace‑bond issues. BNSS sections 126 and 170 let police act before a disturbance is expected. Jantar Mantar is a common site for political rallies, so authorities often require formal re‑notification before protests can resume there.
