Online portal lets Indian motorists view and settle traffic fines

India’s Parivahan e‑challan portal now lets vehicle owners check and pay traffic fines over the internet. The system, run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, creates a digital record of each violation and sends the fine amount to the mobile number linked to the vehicle’s registration. Motorists who miss the SMS or lose the paper notice can retrieve the same details on the portal by entering the registration number, challan number or driving‑licence number.
How to Check
Users select "Check Challan Status", fill in the required fields and pass a captcha. The portal then displays any pending e‑challans together with the offence description and amount. A "Challan Not Found" message only means the entered data may be wrong; it does not guarantee that no violation exists.
How to Pay
On the payment page, the driver enters the same identifiers, clicks "Get Detail", reviews the fine and chooses "Pay Now". Payment can be made through net banking, credit/debit cards or UPI. A receipt and a confirmation SMS are generated for future reference.
Consequences of Ignoring
An unpaid e‑challan stays active. Repeated non‑payment or failure to obey legal notices can trigger licence‑related action, court summons or, in some cases, vehicle detention. Long‑pending fines may be sent to a virtual court, and non‑payment can complicate the sale or transfer of the vehicle’s registration certificate.
Context
The e‑challan scheme replaces paper notices to speed up enforcement and reduce disputes. It relies on camera‑captured evidence as well as officer‑issued tickets, and the online system aims to make compliance easier for motorists.
