Kenya's Health Ministry confirmed the country's second Ebola death on Friday, October 23, 2026, after a 65-year-old woman passed away in quarantine. The victim was a close relative of Kenya's first Ebola patient and began showing symptoms 10 days before her death. She received supportive care at an infectious disease unit in Nairobi, but medical personnel were unable to save her. Her family was notified, and authorities are arranging a safe and dignified burial in consultation with her relatives.

Current Status And Tracking

Seven remaining Ebola patients are currently receiving treatment across two isolation facilities, with no new infections reported. Kenya's outbreak began when a 40-year-old Kenyan man living in Congo traveled through Uganda and arrived in Nairobi on October 3. He tested positive at The Nairobi Hospital on October 5 and died the same day. Authorities have traced roughly 135 contacts of the first patient and placed 118 individuals in quarantine. Eight people tested positive while in quarantine, which includes four health workers and four close family members. Some contacts who finished the 21-day quarantine period without showing symptoms are set to be released starting Saturday, October 24.

International Spread

Meanwhile, authorities in Nigeria reported on Friday that they are still verifying how their first Ebola patient contracted the virus after she tested positive in Abuja upon returning from Uganda. Switzerland's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs stated that the woman, married to a Swiss diplomat, did not visit Congo and likely caught the virus while traveling to Uganda. Her husband remains in isolation without symptoms. Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Pate noted that the Nigerian patient appears closely related to Kenya's first case in terms of infection nature. The Africa CDC previously stated that the first patients in both Nigeria and Kenya traveled through Uganda's Entebbe International Airport on October 3. In response, United States health officials announced that all passengers flying to the U.S. must sign a statement confirming they have not visited Congo in the past 21 days.

Context
