A suspect was taken into custody after a fire engulfed the Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s former mountain retreat in Bavaria. Police said the blaze broke out on the night of Oct 23, when a smoke detector sounded at about 9:50 p.m. (1950 GMT). Around 200 firefighters were sent to the remote Kehlsteinhaus residence on the Obersalzberg peak, 1,834 metres (6,000 feet) above sea level. They reported the building “completely ablaze” and struggled to reach it with heavy‑breathing apparatus because of the altitude and steep access road. No one was inside the structure and no injuries were reported. Police spokeswoman Lisa Maier confirmed that a “suspicious person” was placed in temporary custody. German tabloid Bild added that the detained individual was a motorcyclist found on the way to the scene. Investigators have not disclosed a motive, but media reports suggest arson is suspected. A news conference is planned for later on Saturday. The Eagle’s Nest, built between 1937 and 1938, was intended as a stone and granite monument to the Nazi regime and to impress foreign diplomats, though Hitler rarely visited. The site survived World War II undamaged and, since 1952, has housed a museum on its Nazi history and a restaurant offering panoramic Alpine views.
Context
Heritage sites linked to the Third Reich attract both tourists and controversy, so any damage or criminal act there draws strong public and media attention.
