HealthUnderstanding the Brain Damage and Timely Care Needed During a Stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is cut off or blood vessels rupture. Oxygen and glucose are essential for brain activity, and their interruption damages brain tissues within minutes. The first few hours of a stroke determine how damaged the brain can become. ## Types and Effects Strokes are divided into ischemic and haemorrhagic types. Ischemic strokes happen when an artery is blocked by a blood clot, causing oxygen starvation and toxic substance buildup. Haemorrhagic strokes involve a blood vessel rupturing and leaking blood into the brain tissue. These events can impair vital body functions like speaking, movement, vision, memory, and coordination. Within 3 to 5 minutes of interrupted blood flow, brain cells begin to undergo irreversible damage. With each minute that passes, 1.9 million neurons die due to lack of oxygen.

Medical Treatments

For ischemic strokes, doctors may use intravenous thrombolysis to dissolve clots within 4.5 hours of symptoms. Patients with large vessel blockage may undergo a mechanical thrombectomy to remove the clot using special equipment up to 24 hours after symptoms started. Haemorrhagic strokes require blood pressure control, management of intracranial pressure, and sometimes surgery. Not all patients qualify for every treatment, and decisions depend on medical status, imaging, and timing. ## Context Recognizing stroke symptoms quickly using methods like BE FAST helps patients reach medical care during the critical early window. Medical teams monitor patients continuously and may offer therapies like physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy during recovery.
