Haryana Police are working with the Central Bureau of Investigation to bring fugitive gangster Himanshu Bhau back to India from the United States. US authorities have detained Bhau, and he is now in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Background
Investigators state that Bhau faces charges in India for multiple murder and extortion cases. He first fled the country using a forged surname in his passport, which led Indian police to flag his travel and resulted in his detention for misrepresentation of facts. His criminal record dates back to when he was 17 years old and allegedly tried to murder an adversary. Although arrested then, he escaped from a juvenile correctional facility in Hisar in 2020 and built an overseas criminal network.
Criminal Network
Police allege that Bhau first escaped to Portugal using fake documents and ran his syndicate from abroad. His gang is known to have close ties with rivals of the Lawrence Bishnoi group. The syndicate gained widespread attention in September after taking responsibility on social media for killing gym owner Vijay Kumar in South Delhi. Investigators state Kumar was shot dead on September 14 after being lured outside by two motorcycle riders, marking the third death in a local family rivalry. Bhau's gang also claimed responsibility for a 2024 shooting at a Burger King outlet in Rajouri Garden that left a 26-year-old man dead over an old revenge dispute.
Context
Extradition and deportation processes involving foreign law enforcement agencies typically require extensive diplomatic coordination and verification of identity documents between nations. Fugitives who use forged travel papers often face initial immigration detention before legal pathways for their return to home countries can be finalized.
