Storm Development

The India Meteorological Department has warned that a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will likely turn into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 26. This weather system is expected to stay over the same region and strengthen into a depression on Saturday. After that, it will move and grow stronger into a deep depression, eventually reaching near the Andhra Pradesh coast around the morning of October 28.

Rain Warnings And Alerts

Authorities have issued a pre-cyclone watch for the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and nearby South Odisha. The weather office has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall for coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha from October 27 to 29. If this system turns into a full cyclone, it will be named Arnab. Bangladesh suggested this name, which means ocean in Bengali, for the regional storm naming list managed by the World Meteorological Organization and the weather department.

Context

Coastal regions along the Bay of Bengal frequently experience severe storms and heavy rainfall during the monsoon transition period. Weather agencies track these low-pressure systems closely to give early warnings and help local administrations prepare for safety measures. Such timely alerts are crucial for protecting lives and property in vulnerable coastal areas.
